Despite all we know about the hazards of summer sun, our skin care habits may still fall short, resulting in sunburns and other unfortunate consequences. Here’s a look at some of our most common summertime skin care mishaps, along with proven and trusted remedies.
Mistake: Getting stuck without sunscreen. On rainy days, it’s easy to skip the SPF altogether because it’s not sunny and we plan to be inside anyway. We don’t expect the clouds to break for an afternoon of bright sunshine, where we find ourselves outside and unprotected. The consequence? A surprise sunburn.
Remedy: Prevention is always the best medicine. Throw sunscreen in your purse so it’s with you wherever you go. In the event prevention fails and you get a sunburn, apply an ice pack to help cool skin. You can also soothe your damaged dermis and speed healing by applying aloe, a natural healing agent, and moisturizers and cleansers containing oats, a powerful anti-inflammatory. Once your sunburn is entirely healed, treat your skin to a photofacial, which is clinically-proven to reduce sun damage and many signs of aging by improving age and sun spots, freckles, small veins, redness, pore size, and more.
Mistake: Forgetting to reapply sunscreen. By now, you know to never leave home without donning SPF, but there’s a good chance you are still leaving your skin inadequately protected by forgetting to reapply throughout the day, which almost always results in a sunburn.
Remedy: Prevention! Set a reminder on your phone until reapplying SPF becomes a habit. The key is to reapply every two hours you are out in the sun (sooner if swimming or sweaty). If you do forget to reapply, soothe sunburned skin with the aforementioned recommendations.
Mistake: Letting sweat dry on your skin. Don’t run errands in your sweaty workout gear. Whether it’s from exercise or the humidity, sweat traps bacteria on your skin, resulting in clogged pores and pimples.
Remedy: To keep your skin clear and calm, immediately shower off sweat and change into clean, dry clothes. For extra comfort and care, you can also deep-clean and revitalize your pores with a professional body scrub or facial at The MedSpa at Hendrick.
Mistake: Going to bed too late. Lack of sleep is a clinically-proven beauty killer, resulting in dull skin, under eye bags, and premature lines and wrinkles.
Remedy: Sleep! Your skin can also benefit from a skin revitalizing treatment that stimulates new collagen and elastin production and encourages blood circulation for a rosy glow. Halo™ laser skin renewal is one of our favorite options for revealing radiant skin with about a week of downtime. Other options for improving the look and feel of your skin with little to no downtime include BBL™ photofacials, microdermabrasion, microneedling, and chemical peels.
Mistake: Forgetting to hydrate. Dehydration is about so much more than just getting thirsty. Drinking too little can result in dry skin, fatigue, headaches, constipation, and lightheadedness.
Remedy: Sip water throughout day, especially when sweating. Carry your favorite beverage with you so you’re never stuck with thirst, which is sign you have been dehydrated for a while.
